Welcome to the Hill Country Archeological Association in Kerrville, Texas.

Who we are and what we do

The HCAA is a group of avocational and professional archeologists working together to study and preserve the Texas Hill Country’s prehistoric and historic heritage, and to educate the public about archeology.

The task of HCAA is to survey and record details about archeologically significant sites before they are lost, due to collecting, erosion, and the rapidly increasing development of the Texas Hill Country. To accomplish this, we cultivate public interest in the history and prehistory of this area.

San Antonio River Digs

Cannon Balls Found in the San Antonio River

Rusty participated in digs at the loop of the San Antonio River closest to the Alamo for four years (1990-1993). Clive Cussler, author of Raise the Titanic, through his organization, the National Underwater Marine Association (NUMA), sponsored these four digs to search for Alamo Cannons. They followed several different leads as to cannons being dumped into the river before and after the battle, and conducted several magnetometer surveys. The river was drained for over a week each year for the city to make repairs, so they set up their screens and worked almost around the clock. They found many Alamo (and earlier) era artifacts, but no cannons - YET! See images below taken of the dig by Rusty Busby.
